Latvian Women Protest Convention Withdrawal Amidst Ongoing Concerns

Riga, Latvia – Latvian women staged protests this week, voicing their opposition to the withdrawal of the Istanbul Convention on the prevention of violence against women. The demonstrations coincide with a somber reflection on events within Latvia, specifically concerning domestic violence and the support available to victims. It has been three years since a tragic incident in the Jēkabpils region, where Leon Rusiņš fatally attacked his former partner and their children in the presence of the mother.

Following the event, legislative changes were enacted to strengthen protections for victims of violence, particularly within the South Latvian region. However, concerns remain regarding the full utilization of these measures. Recently, on April 16, 2023, a woman from the Jēkabpils area was subjected to a brutal assault involving a whip, an incident broadcast by Latvian public broadcaster LSM.

The attack occurred in front of her child and mother. The protests highlight continued anxieties surrounding domestic violence within the Latvian context and underscore the need for improved support systems and accessibility for women in vulnerable areas like Jēkabpils. Authorities are currently reviewing strategies to enhance victim assistance and preventative measures.
