A significant accumulation of discarded fish scraps was discovered in Tartu parish, prompting an environmental investigation. Local residents initially reported finding large piles of fish waste near Vesneri-Vahiannuse road. Subsequent checks revealed that the discarded material was present in at least two other nearby locations, resulting in a total count of 269 piles of scraps.

The matter was first investigated by the Environmental Board (keskkonnaamet). However, responsibility for the ongoing inquiry has transitioned to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (toiduamet). According to statements from former keskkonnaamet investigator Carl-Felix Telk, inspections were conducted on nearby fish processing facilities, specifically focusing on their waste management procedures.

He confirmed that during the review process, no regulatory violations were identified regarding the companies’ waste handling. The discovery raised immediate concerns about local waste disposal practices. The initial findings indicated that a substantial amount of organic waste oli accumulating in public areas, necessitating official intervention.

The involvement of both the environmental agency and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food underscores the seriousness of the issue. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the source of the discarded material and to reinforce compliance among the local industry. Authorities are continuing to monitor the site to ensure that proper waste disposal protocols are maintained by all
