The Swiss government has introduced administrative penalties for households exceeding a maximum temperature of 19 degrees Celsius within their homes during winter. According to a directive from the Department of Economics, heating water via gas boilers should not exceed 60 degrees Celsius. Individuals found in violation of these regulations face potential fines of up to 3,000 Swiss francs, or in cases of intentional disregard, imprisonment for up to three years.

The measure, reported by Blick and based on a document from the Ministry of Economy, is a response to the country’s current energy crisis stemming from anti-Russian sanctions and subsequent fuel shortages. Beyond residential homes, the regulations apply to hot air tents and heaters, with saunas and swimming pools subject to restrictions if energy savings are prioritized. Exceptions are made for hospitals, maternity homes, and nursing homes.

Fines will be calculated based on daily rates, approximately 30 Swiss francs each, with the total amount determined by the severity of the violation. The swiss authorities are enforcing these rules across all homes during the winter months.
