Molumba architects have won the planning competition for a new town development in the area of the former Rannaste, Kungu, Nuka and Variku airfields near Raadi, Estonia. The project, titled “Home’s value in the area,” aims to create a nature-oriented town with space for residents, animals, and vegetation. The development, spearheaded by Molumba OÜ, will incorporate modern architecture alongside environmental principles, including a new town park adjacent to Raadi. The project’s location near Tartu city, approximately three kilometers from the city center, is considered a key advantage. Plans include connecting the new town with the city center via pedestrian and bicycle routes, promoting sustainable transportation. The area’s development is being praised by Tartu Mayor Jarno Laur for its incorporation of public green space and business/social functions. Tartu municipality architect Egle Nõmmoja highlighted the project’s alignment with Ebenzer Howard’s garden city concept, integrating urban and rural elements. The town will be divided into four apartment groups connected by public green corridors. The planning concept emphasizes preserving the area’s existing terrain and natural environment, including the Raadi nature reserve. Molumba architect Johan Tali noted the goal is to maintain a “wild feeling” within the development, creating a sense of being surrounded by nature. The project’s overall aim is to integrate the new town with the surrounding area while maximizing the preservation of the existing landscape.
