The crystals found in the early human habitats have puzzled archaeologists for a long time: they were collected, but not for tools or jewelry. Why did our ancestors consider these strange stones valuable? A recent article sheds new light on this question by studying the influence of crystals on our close relatives – the chimpanzees. The experiments showed that the animals can distinguish crystals from other stones and show an unexpectedly strong interest in them. They were particularly fascinated by the transparency and regular geometry of the crystals. This may indicate that the sensitivity to such objects is very old in evolution.
