Postimee conducted a two-day investigation in Tallinn and Harjumaa, calculating with individuals regarding their upcoming automatic vehicle taxes. Over two days, the team spoke with approximately 70 people, encompassing a diverse range of vehicles. Ten examples from these conversations are included in this report. The overall picture reveals that while some vehicles will incur the highest annual tax amounts, many individuals face significant automatic vehicle tax payments. One example was a 2015 Ford Mustang, which will result in the highest annual tax payment. Others include a Dodge RAM owner whose annual tax would exceed 800 euros, and a BMW X7 luxury SUV owner who would pay approximately 800 euros annually. A Dodge RAM owner wished to remain anonymous and declined to discuss his vehicle, and the BMW owner had taken the luxury SUV on a full-service rental, thus not directly impacted by the automatic vehicle tax. Many individuals were hesitant to disclose the size of their automatic vehicle tax, and some expressed no interest. Conversely, several individuals were critical of the tax, citing financial difficulties. For instance, a woman driving a Porsche Cayenne described the challenge of managing the automatic vehicle tax alongside her teacher’s salary and four children. Other owners of lower-class vehicles expressed concern about the new tax burden. The overall trend indicates a preference for older vehicles regarding automatic vehicle taxes. The size of the tax is not always determined by the vehicle’s CO2 emissions. For example, an owner of a 2008 Audi with a 3.2-liter gasoline engine would pay over 100 euros in automatic vehicle tax annually. Newer vehicles have a higher probability of incurring greater financial burdens.
