In the ongoing Lithuanian migration crisis, journalist Toomas Herm expressed a specific view regarding the response to border violators. Herm, writing for Virumaa Teataja, stated that the situation necessitates bringing the attacker down. He referenced a scenario at the Luhamaa border checkpoint where he received an unwelcome surprise: an Estonian border guard was reportedly prevented from utilizing a firearm, even for a warning shot, if the border violator failed to comply with a legally issued order.

Herm clarified that the use of a service weapon is generally reserved for situations posing an immediate danger to life or health. He questioned the ability to quickly assess such a threat, citing an example of a border violator aiming a pistol as a potentially critical, and too late, moment.
