Bear Emerges from Hibernation in Estonian Village

A video captured a young bear emerging from hibernation in the snowy village of Kastli, Tartu County, Estonia, last weekend. The footage, obtained by the Estonian Society for the Recovery of Lost People, shows the bear exhibiting typical behaviors following its winter sleep. The animal was observed rolling in the snow and actively moving around the area, indicating it was waking from hibernation.

Experts believe the bear is a juvenile based on its observed activity. According to the Estonian Environment Agency, the awakening of male bears typically occurs in March, coinciding with warming temperatures and the softening of snow cover. Female bears, often accompanied by their cubs, generally begin to emerge from hibernation in April.

The video provides a visual record of this natural process. Authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wildlife, particularly as bears become more active following their hibernation period. Further monitoring by the Estonian Environment Agency will continue to track bear activity across the region.

The footage is currently available for public viewing.
