Anchorage, Alaska, will host the 54th starting of the Iditarod dog sled race, a competition stretching over more than 1,600 kilometers. A ceremonial start was held Saturday. Hundreds of dogs barked as the event’s opening ceremony took place in Anchorage.

The official start will occur later today.
