Online Offers Pose Risks of Recurring Payments, Says Consumer Protection Office

Increasingly attractive online promotions, including discounts, gift cards, and free trial periods, are presenting potential risks for consumers across the European Union. The Consumer Protection and Technical Supervision Office warns that even seemingly innocuous clicks or initial purchases can lead to unintended recurring payments or extended contractual obligations. These situations are commonly referred to as “order or contract traps.”

Heldin Malmet, head of the Consumer Protection and Technical Supervision Office’s consumer advice center, explains that these traps occur when consumers fail to fully understand the terms and conditions associated with an online offer.

“Consumers need to be aware that a seemingly beneficial promotion can automatically trigger ongoing charges or longer-term commitments.”

The office advises how to avoid these pitfalls by carefully scrutinizing all terms and conditions before committing to any purchase. This includes paying close attention to automatic renewal clauses, subscription details, and the length of any contracts offered. If a consumer has already been subjected to a payment trap, Malmet recommends immediately contacting the company involved to dispute the charges and cancel any recurring subscriptions.

Consumers should also review their bank statements regularly to monitor for unauthorized transactions. The Consumer Protection and Technical Supervision Office emphasizes proactive vigilance as the best defense against these deceptive practices.
