The story surrounding freestyle skiing athlete Henry Sildaru and his father, Tõnis Sildaru, has taken an unexpected turn following a personal cross-country skiing competition. Henry Sildaru, the Olympic silver medalist in the downhill race at the Milan-Cortina Games, has accused his father of actions that prompted him to return prize money and withdraw from Team Estonia A-category support. The Estonian Olympic Committee (EOK) had previously allocated €70,000 to Henry Sildaru and €35,000 to his coach, Tõnis Sildaru.

This allocation was made possible due to the coach lacking the required qualification certificate, necessitating the EOK to utilize funds from its own budget. Furthermore, Henry Sildaru’s Olympic silver medal entitled him to a two-year period of Team Estonia A-category support. Following these circumstances, Henry Sildaru has returned the awarded funds and subsequently removed himself from the Team Estonia A-category program.

The situation highlights a complex interplay between athlete support and qualification requirements within Estonian sports. The sildaru family’s actions have created a notable disruption in the athlete’s support structure.
