Spring-blue butterflies are covered in tiny scales. These give the wings of butterflies a species-specific pattern and coloration through chemical or physical processes.

Some of the scales’ colors are the result of chemical reactions that have formed pigments, but other colors are the result of the way light is refracted in the scales. This is called structural coloration, and it is found in some butterflies, such as the skipper butterflies and the blue butterflies. This coloration is not always the same, but can change depending on the angle of the light.
