U.S. stock exchanges experienced a surge in optimism on September 8, 2022, fueled by positive sentiment from Asian investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 1.4 percent, the S&P 500 rose 1.8 percent, and the Nasdaq climbed 2.1 percent.

This trend extended to Asia, with the Japanese stock market gaining 2.3 percent and Australia increasing by 1.8 percent. Conversely, the Hong Kong stock exchange declined 0.8 percent, and China’s market saw a decrease of 0.4 percent. Restrictions on movement in Chengdu, China, were extended due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, indicating that China is maintaining its zero-tolerance policy.

“Today, Asia is digesting whether the zero tolerance policy will continue to have an impact on China’s economy, which will begin to affect Asia more broadly through imports,” stated Gary Ng, senior economist at Natix.
