♪ Listen 0:00 The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed deep concern Wednesday regarding North Korea’s ongoing nuclear activities, stating they remain a “serious source of concern.” The IAEA recently characterized the continuation of North Korea’s nuclear program as “extremely regrettable” and a violation of UN Security Council resolutions. Recent reports indicate ongoing work at the Yongbyon nuclear complex, including the completion of a new annex building and outer structure initiated in September of last year, though the building’s purpose remains undetermined. Furthermore, the agency noted the resumption of work on the main test tunnel at Punggye-ri, alongside renewed road construction in the area. “The resumption of the test tunnel is deeply worrying, as is the known extension of the enrichment facility (at Yongbyon) and the continued operation of the 5MW(e) reactor,” the IAEA stated in its annual report. The report, to be submitted to the IAEA General Conference this month, details all available information. IAEA inspectors were expelled from North Korea in 2009, and the agency has since monitored the country’s activities primarily through satellite imagery. The IAEA has previously voiced concerns about North Korea’s actions. North Korea has conducted a series of weapons tests this year, including a test of an intercontinental ballistic missile in August, the most powerful test since 2017. Officials from Washington and South Korea believe North Korea is preparing for its seventh nuclear test. The situation involves nuclear, north, korea and nuclear facilities.
