Estonian Speaker Opens Honorary Consulate in Munich MUNICH – Speaker of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar opened the honorary consulate of Estonia in Munich on February 21, 2024. Hussar stated that honorary consuls are vital members of Estonia’s diplomatic family, representing the nation globally and contributing to supporting Estonian citizens abroad, promoting culture, and facilitating business diplomacy. The opening coincided with a round table organized by the Bavarian Industrial Association, which Hussar described as demonstrating significant potential for the development of bilateral commercial relations between Estonia and Bavaria. He expressed optimism for continued growth in trade and new business connections. Andreas Obereider has been appointed as the honorary consul of Estonia in Munich. Estonia maintains honorary consulates in Bonn, Kiel, Schwerin, Bremen, Frankfurt, Leipzig, and Heidelberg. During his visit, Hussar also met with the President of the Bavarian Landtag Ilze Igeler and Minister for Europe Eric Baussvanger. He participated in a seminar of honorary consuls in Berlin and delivered a speech at a reception commemorating the 106th anniversary of the Estonian Republic. Hussar’s meetings also addressed continued support for Ukraine, emphasizing the nation’s fight for democratic values and the need for comprehensive assistance, including military aid, until Ukraine achieves victory. He advocated for utilizing frozen Russian assets to compensate for damages and maintaining sanctions against those responsible for aggression.
