NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg has stated that the alliance must prepare for a “hard winter” in Ukraine and for its supporters, anticipating that Russia will continue its efforts to take control of the country. Speaking to the Associated Press, Stoltenberg indicated that the war in Ukraine is approaching a critical juncture, noting the halt of the Russian advance in Donbass and Ukraine’s ability to regain territory. Despite a commitment made at a meeting in Ramstein, Germany, to provide Ukraine with increased equipment and weapons, Stoltenberg emphasized the urgent need for additional winter supplies.

He explained that the Ukrainian army is currently three times larger than it was last winter and requires more winter clothing, generators for electricity and heat, and tents and other survival equipment. “Winter is coming and winter will be hard on the battlefield in Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said. He urged Western countries, facing high energy prices and inflation, to maintain their support, arguing that abandoning Ukraine would be a price too high to pay.

“The price we pay is measured in money, in US dollars or pounds or euros, while the price that Ukrainians pay is measured in human lives,” he stated. Stoltenberg warned that a Russian victory in Ukraine would embolden President Putin to use brutal military force and violate international rules, potentially leading to further aggression.
