The Russians have, for various reasons, increasingly preferred cash. In January, 1.6 trillion rubles were withdrawn from banks in Russia. Experts attribute this to a decrease in trust in banking and e-payments.

The increase in cash demand may increase inflation and put pressure on the banking system. According to the Central Bank of Russia, Russians withdrew more than 1.6 trillion rubles from bank accounts in January (19.7 billion dollars). The Ministry of Internal Affairs plans to restrict cash withdrawals, referring to the prevention of fraud.
