The most important film director in Iran, Dariush Mehrjui, was shot dead at his home near Tehran on Saturday, a judge announced on Sunday. Mehrjui, 83, was a key figure in Iran’s new wave of cinema, having produced the 1969 film “Cow,” considered one of the first examples of this movement.

His wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, was also killed in the incident.
