British new Prime Minister Liz Truss has announced a plan to freeze household energy bills for two years. The measure, intended to alleviate the impact of the current energy crisis, will see significant reductions in gas and electricity costs for consumers. According to government officials, the plan will also consider the UK’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, balancing consumer and business needs without abandoning established targets.

Households are projected to experience an 80% increase in energy bills in October. Businesses with unlimited energy bills have warned of potential bankruptcy. Inflation currently stands at 10.1 percent, a rate expected to continue rising.

The energy bill freeze is anticipated to cost tens of billions of pounds. Prime Minister Truss and new Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng assert that the initiative will significantly benefit the economy, reducing inflation by four to five percent. Additionally, the government has lifted the ban on fracking for oil and gas extraction and will issue more drilling licenses for the North Sea.

Truss cited a long-standing, short-sighted energy policy as a contributing factor to the UK’s vulnerability to gas price fluctuations. “Extreme challenges require extreme measures to ensure that the UK will never again find itself in such a situation,” she stated. Kwarteng added that households and companies can now experience relief.
