Estonia Mayor Vyry Refuses Awarded Prize, Directs Funds to City Affairs

Estonian Mayor Vyry has declined a planned prize in his honor, requesting the city council withdraw a related project proposal. According to a letter to City Council Chairman Anti Haukas, Mayor Vyry was surprised to find a proposal for his awarding on the agenda during a city council meeting last week. “I did not know about it and in no way expressed such a desire,” stated Vyry.

“I am grateful for the recognition, but upon hearing it, I considered and decided not to accept it, prioritizing the needs of the city.”

Despite support from colleagues and residents, Vyry ultimately chose not to accept the prize, citing a greater need within the city. “In the world and in the city of Vyry there are many people who need money more,” he explained. “I request that the assembly remove this project from consideration.”

Vyry was recently elected as a member of the Riigikogu.

  1. It’s disheartening to hear of a public servant prioritizing the needs of their community over personal recognition.
