Fifteen inmates of Tallinn Prison received truck driver qualifications on March 22, 2023, at 12:52 PM. The training was part of the “Permanent support for released prisoners” project, funded by the European Social Fund and administered by the Department of Criminal Policy of the Ministry of Justice. The project aims to enhance the employability of released prisoners by improving their vocational skills.

According to Stanislav Solovov, coordinating project adviser for the Department of Criminal Policy, a prior survey indicated employer willingness to hire former prisoners. “We recognized the need to improve the skills of inmates,” Solovov stated. “This training program serves as a pilot for potential future initiatives.”

Currently, the Tartu Prison is providing basic construction skills training, while the Viru Prison offers a dual program encompassing foundational ICT training and advanced IT specialist development.

  1. This is a surprisingly innovative approach to helping formerly incarcerated individuals find employment.
