Gulf of Riga Fully Frozen Over, Providing Opportunities for Fishermen

This year, the entire Gulf of Riga has frozen over, according to researchers at the Estonian Marine Institute of the University of Tartu. Marine scientist Heli Špilev reported that the extensive ice cover has presented a notable opportunity for recreational and commercial fishermen. The significant ice formation has been a source of considerable activity along the Pärnu River, with frequent reports received from those engaged in angling.

Špilev noted that fortunately, sufficient space exists within the ice for fish to relocate, allowing many species to avoid areas experiencing conditions unsuitable for them due to natural fluctuations. However, the scientist emphasized that fish populations are vulnerable to human activity and modern technology. While the ice provides a degree of refuge, it does not negate the impact of fishing efforts.

Ongoing monitoring by the Estonian Marine Institute will continue to assess the conditions within the frozen Gulf and its effect on the local fish populations. The situation remains dynamic, with the extent of the ice and its impact on marine life being closely observed. —
