Estonian Government Approves Requirement for Estonian Language Proficiency for Military Enlistment

Tallinn – The Estonian government has supported draft amendments to the Defence Service Act, initiated by the Defence Committee, which will mandate B1-level proficiency in Estonian for prospective military recruits starting in 2027. The amendments were approved on Thursday. According to Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur, the primary objective of the changes is to bolster the security of conscripts and enhance the battle readiness of military units.

The proposed legislation introduces a formal language requirement as part of the enlistment process. The Defence Committee’s draft incorporates provisions aimed at ensuring that all personnel within the Estonian Defence Force possess a sufficient understanding of the national language to effectively operate and contribute to defence efforts. This measure is intended to strengthen operational cohesion and communication within the military.

The government’s support for this legislation reflects a commitment to strengthening Estonia’s national security posture. Further details regarding implementation and training programs will be announced in the coming weeks. The focus remains on ensuring a well-prepared and capable defence force.
