A fox cub possessing the genome of a spotted hyena was discovered near the village of Tumati in Northeastern Siberia. The discovery, accompanied by the mummy of a hyena cub also recovered from the Siberian permafrost, offers new insights into the extinction of spotted hyenas at the end of the Ice Age. The cub’s genetic makeup, detailed in a study, reveals a close relationship between the species. Researchers believe this finding provides a potential explanation for the demise of the spotted hyenas.
