Five Estonian footballers have now competed in the European top leagues. Karol Mets began the Bundesliga season with St. Pauli, becoming the second Estonian to play in the league after Ragnar Klavani. Mets’ inclusion marked the fifth Estonian to play in a top European league, following in the footsteps of Klavani, Mart Poom, Georgi Tunjov, and Karl Jakob Hein, who have played in the German, Spanish, Italian, and French top leagues. Ragnar Klavan’s career included a period with Liverpool, where he scored a goal in the Premier League in 2016. Prior to Liverpool, Klavan played for Augsburg, finishing fifth in the Bundesliga in the 2014/15 season. Mart Poom debuted in the Premier League with Derby County in 1997 and later played for Sunderland and Arsenal before concluding his top-level career at Watford. Georgi Tunjov played three times in the starting lineup for SPAL in the Italian Serie C in 2019/20. Karl Jakob Hein currently plays for Valladolid in Spain on loan, becoming the first Estonian to play for Ragnar Klavani.
