Emergency Services Respond to Multiple Incidents in Põltsamaa

Põltsamaa, Estonia – Local emergency services responded to two separate incidents on Wednesday evening, highlighting concerns regarding unsafe conditions and risky behavior following a significant reduction in ice cover across local water bodies. The Põltsamaa rescue service received a report of children observed playing on the rapidly deteriorating ice. Simultaneously, the emergency center was alerted to young people who had initiated a small fire within the city limits.

Authorities emphasized the extreme danger posed by the diminishing ice, noting that it is exceptionally fragile and unstable. The recent thaw has created hazardous conditions on surrounding lakes and waterways. “The situation is particularly concerning given the reports of individuals, including children and young people, engaging in potentially life-threatening activities on the ice,” stated a spokesperson for the Põltsamaa rescue service.

“We urge the public to exercise extreme caution and to maintain a significant distance from all frozen water surfaces.”

The emergency center is continuing to monitor the situation and remind residents of the ongoing risks associated with the thawing ice. Further updates will be provided as they become available. [Photo: Urmas Luik]
