Chancellor Karl Nemacher of Austria announced his resignation following unsuccessful coalition negotiations. According to reports shared on social media platform X, Nemacher stated that no agreement could be reached with the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) on key issues. He will also step down from his role as chairman of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP).

The ÖVP had been in negotiations to form a ruling coalition with the liberal NEOS party and the SPÖ. NEOS withdrew from the discussions on January 3rd. Austria held parliamentary elections in late September 2025, where the right-wing Freedom Party secured 29.2% of the vote, preventing the formation of a government under its leadership.

The ÖVP secured second place, and the SPÖ achieved third. Andreas Babler, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, confirmed the failure of negotiations, accusing the ÖVP of considering measures impacting pensions and public sector salaries. Nemacher countered that the ÖVP would not support measures focused on production, business, or new taxes.

Karl Nemacher has served as Chancellor of Austria since December 2021. Reuters reports that his resignation may trigger new parliamentary elections in the country.
