The Emajõgi is currently navigable from Peipsi to Võrtsjärv. One of the landing places is located near the lodge. Photo: Kristjan Teedema It has been claimed that in the distant Middle Ages, the inhabitants of Tartu and Pskov had a navigable connection to the Baltic Sea through Lake Peipsi, Lake Emajõgi and Lake Võrtsjärv.

In this case, it would be natural to argue that the development and prosperity of the medieval Hanseatic city of Tartu was based to some extent on the trade in goods that passed through the waterways – something that no longer seems to have been the case in the 17th century, but which was attempted in one way or another. These attempts suggest the possibility that the medieval waterway may have been known about in the future. It was also said that in the 18th century, the Pärnu River was called the Emajõgi from the mouth to the Navesti River.
