Veljo Runnel, organizer of the Estonian Nature Marathon and an expert in amateur science at the Tartu University Natural History Museum, initiated the event. The Nature Marathon is modeled after the international observation format, BioBlitz. Participants, including amateur observers and scientists, aim to identify as many species of animals, birds, insects, plants, lichens, fish, and fungi as possible within a designated area and timeframe. The event is categorized as a marathon, similar to running, skiing, cycling, sauna, and hiking marathons.
