A rare two-headed tortoise was discovered by a tourist in the Pamukkale hot springs of Turkey and is currently under the care of researchers at Pamukkale University’s biology department. The hatchling, estimated to be six months old, was found with two heads and six legs. Initial examinations have revealed that the tortoise possesses a single digestive system.

Researchers are studying the specimen, a rare phenomenon, to understand its unique development. A similar two-headed tortoise was previously found in England in September and named Mary-Kate and Ashley. However, unlike the Turkish tortoise, Mary-Kate and Ashley had separate digestive systems.

The tortoise is exhibiting independent swimming capabilities, with both sides of its body functioning in synchronization. Veterinary staff at New England Wildlife Centers are providing specialized care for the unusual two tortoise.
