Estonian Residents Invited to Monitor Spring Bird Migration

Tallinn, Estonia – The Estonian Ornithological Society is appealing to residents to participate in a citizen science project focused on tracking the arrival of migratory birds. The initiative, running until the end of May, aims to gather valuable data on the spring migration patterns across Estonia. Individuals interested in contributing can report observations of returning birds, detailing key information such as the date and time of sighting, precise location, identified species, estimated numbers of individuals, and observed activity.

Accurate species identification is crucial for the project’s success. Data collection is facilitated through the PlutoF GO application or the desktop version, PlutoF. All submitted information will be publicly accessible via the elurikkus.ee portal.

Detailed instructions for observation and data entry are available on the Estonian Ornithological Society’s website, eoy.ee/fenovaatlused. “This project relies on the public’s assistance to understand the timing and routes of migratory birds,” explained Tarvo Valker, coordinator of ornithological observations. “By reporting the arrival of these birds, citizens play a vital role in monitoring and protecting Estonia’s rich avian biodiversity.” The project seeks to document the arrival of migratory birds and contribute to ongoing research.
