Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that Russia will cease supplying oil and gas to countries that impose price caps. Putin stated that setting price caps on imported oil and gas, as some Western countries are considering, would be “completely nonsensical.” “We will not supply anything at all if it goes against our interests, in this case, economic interests. We will not supply gas, oil, coal, or fuel oil,” Putin said at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

The G7 finance ministers last Friday announced their intention to set price caps on imported oil and oil products. Implementing price caps on Russian oil could potentially reduce prices on the global oil market. Furthermore, it would reduce the revenue of the Russian state budget, which finances the invasion of Ukraine.
