A rocket strike hit a complex in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on February 28th, which houses the Estonian embassy. All embassy staff are safe. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the threat of missile attacks remains high across the Middle East.

Over the past 24 hours, hostilities have spread beyond Iran’s borders, with Iran continuing large-scale ballistic missile and drone attacks against several Gulf states. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Estonian citizens in the region should remain calm and stay in a safe place. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working around the clock to assist our citizens, and we are doing everything possible to ensure that Estonians travelling abroad can return home at the earliest opportunity.

We are also in constant contact with other countries in order to organize evacuation flights if necessary,” Tsahkna said, adding that it is most important to monitor local information channels and follow their instructions. Many Middle Eastern countries have closed their airspace and airports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot predict when airspace will be opened or closed, and it is important to stress that open airspace does not guarantee that all flights will operate.

Approximately 3,000 Estonian citizens are currently in the Middle East region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated travel advisories for Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan on February 28th. The United States and Israel launched an operation overnight into Saturday aimed at overthrowing the Iranian regime.

  1. This is absolutely terrifying. It’s incredibly concerning to hear about the attack on the Estonian embassy and the ongoing threats in the region – I sincerely hope all the staff are truly safe and that Estonia can ensure the safety of its citizens abroad.

  2. This attack on the Estonian embassy underscores the escalating instability within the Middle East and the persistent danger posed by regional actors. The continued barrage of missile and drone attacks highlights the vulnerability of diplomatic missions and necessitates ongoing vigilance and security measures for Estonian citizens operating in the region.
