Riivo Sinijärv was impressed by the great interest of Elizabeth II in Estonia

Riivo Sinijärv, Estonia’s first ambassador to the United Kingdom (serving from 1993 to 1995), has shared recollections of his interactions with Queen Elizabeth II. In a letter sent to a British newspaper, Sinijärv recounted his initial meeting with the monarch. He subsequently provided a detailed account of the meeting to the Estonian newspaper, Postimees.

Sinijärv described his first encounter with elizabeth as a “surprisingly informal” and “pleasant” experience, noting that it occurred during a private reception. The ambassador’s reflections offer a unique perspective on the early stages of Estonia’s diplomatic relationship with the United Kingdom.
