Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday that Russia will not supply oil and gas to countries that set price caps on imported energy. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin described efforts to impose price caps on imported oil and gas as “a completely stupid decision.” “We will not supply anything at all if it goes against our interests, in this case economic interests,” Putin stated. “We will not supply gas, oil, coal, or fuel oil.” The announcement follows a statement from G7 finance ministers last Friday who indicated a desire to establish price caps on imported oil and oil products.

The potential implementation of such a cap could reduce global oil prices and diminish revenue for the Russian state budget, which is reportedly funded by the invasion of Ukraine.
