Research Links Psychological Factors to Weight and Health

Tartu, Estonia – Research conducted by Professor Uku Vainik, head of the Estonian Centre for Wellbeing Science (ESTWELL), suggests a significant connection between psychological factors and an individual’s health and weight. Professor Vainik, a professor of behavioral genetics at Tartu University, addressed concerns raised by a health website regarding the relationship between weight and well-being. Speaking on the matter, Professor Vainik explained that overweight and obesity are not simply a matter of inherent predisposition.

Instead, he asserts that psychological influences play a crucial role in an individual’s weight trajectory. “People do not inherently want to be overweight or obese,” he stated. The research highlights that various psychological factors can contribute to the development of unhealthy weight, emphasizing that it’s a complex interplay between biology and behavior.

Professor Vainik’s work through ESTWELL focuses on understanding these connections to ultimately improve public health strategies. Further research is ongoing to explore the specific mechanisms driving this relationship between health, weight, and psychological well-being.
