Polish Official Highlights Divergent Views on Russian Threat at Baltic Defence Conference

Colonel Zdzisław Śliwa, an associate professor and colonel at the Institute of International Relations and Security in Wrocław, Poland, attended the annual Russian conference held at the Tartu Baltic Defence College. The event took place in Tartu, Estonia. The appearance comes amidst ongoing political debate in Poland regarding a proposed EU SAFE protection investment loan.

The situation reflects significant strain on Poland’s defense funding and highlights underlying political divisions within the country. President Nowak and the head of the central bank, Adam Glapiński, have suggested utilizing bank profits as an alternative to securing EU financing. Colonel Śliwa voiced a contrasting perspective, stating that the Estonian understanding of the Russian threat remains more defined.

“If we compare, the Estonian understanding of the Russian threat is still clearer than the Polish one,” he commented. The conference focused on security challenges in the Baltic region and broader Russian influence. The event underscored differing strategic viewpoints regarding defense and security policy between Poland and its Baltic neighbors.
