Skiing’s Evolution: From Niche Sport to National Icon in Estonia The development of skiing has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from a specialized activity to a cornerstone of winter sports. This evolution, spanning decades, has culminated in skiing’s current status as the unquestionable number one winter sport within Estonia. Historically, the experience of skiing was markedly different. Early iterations of the sport, often referred to as the “era of the big rifle,” lacked the comforts associated with modern practices. Following a run, participants routinely encountered wet clothing due to the nature of the terrain. A significant challenge was exposure to the cold, which could lead to discomfort, sometimes described as “blue,” resulting from prolonged adjustments to shooting positions with elbows. Ski poles were frequently discarded into the snow during skiing sessions. Despite this, the sport gained increasing prominence. Initially, skiing’s appeal wasn’t immediately widespread, and securing unanimous support even within sports circles took time. However, sustained development fostered its acceptance and solidified its position as the most popular winter activity in Estonia.
