New Bird Houses Installed on Õismäe Pond

New bird nesting houses have been installed on the Õismäe pond, following a long-standing need to provide a safe environment for waterfowl. The houses were designed and constructed with the intention of supporting local bird populations. The design of the houses was inspired by the exhibits at the Estonian Open Air Museum, reflecting a deliberate effort to integrate natural design elements into the project.

This approach addressed a previous challenge observed on the pond – ducks frequently nested on existing platforms extending into the water. However, the chicks born on these platforms were vulnerable, with instances documented of them falling into the water and becoming prey for larger birds. To mitigate this risk, the new houses offer a secure and protected space for nesting and raising young.

Officials are hopeful that the new structures will be quickly adopted by local bird populations. They anticipate a successful transition and the establishment of a thriving avian community within the Õismäe pond ecosystem. The project represents a proactive step towards supporting biodiversity and ensuring the safety of nesting birds.
