The first footage from the upcoming biopic “Maria,” starring Angelina Jolie, has been released by director Pablo Larraín. Deadline reports that the film chronicles the life of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Larraín, known for his critically acclaimed films “Jeck,” “The Count,” and “Spencer,” is directing the project.

The released footage includes images of Jolie wearing an elegant hat and a photograph capturing a moment of emotional distress. Filming is currently underway, with an estimated production timeline of approximately eight weeks. The movie focuses on Callas’s final days.

Maria Callas died in Paris in 1977 at the age of 53, having suffered from dermatomyositis, a rare disease affecting connective tissues and smooth muscles. Details regarding the film’s musical score are currently undisclosed. It remains unclear whether Jolie will perform the music herself or if an opera singer, as Julianne Moore did in “Belcanto,” will provide the vocals.

Archival footage of Callas’s singing may also be incorporated. Production for “Maria” began in October and is scheduled to conclude by the end of December. The filming will take place across Europe, including Paris, France; Greece; Budapest, Hungary; and Milan, Italy.

  1. Jolie’s portrayal of Callas looks promising, and I’m eager to see how Larraín brings this iconic figure to the screen.
