Production of pellet fuel relies heavily on agreements established by retailers in the spring, often preceding the autumn commencement of the heating season. This established system is now being scrutinized for its vulnerabilities.

Entrepreneurs within the sector highlight the inherent challenges, particularly concerning the unpredictability of future production costs. The current surge in energy prices makes it exceptionally difficult to accurately forecast the potential expense of pellet manufacturing. “The time for signing contracts has arrived, but we are not in a hurry,” stated Renee Abel, owner of Briketipoisid OÜ, a company specializing in pellet and briquette production.

Abel’s comments reflect a cautious approach within the industry. The reliance on long-term contracts creates a disconnect between retailer demand and the fluctuating realities of energy markets. This gap is exacerbated by the current crisis, raising concerns about the stability and potential affordability of pellet supply.

Further adjustments to the traditional contracting model are being considered as the industry responds to these pressures.
