Hansabuss Announces Intent to Suspend Viljandi Bus Lines Due to Low Ridership

Viljandi, Estonia – Hansabuss, a regional bus company, has announced its intention to cease operations on eight of its Viljandi lines due to sustained low ridership. The company cited a consistent decline in passenger numbers over a period of time as the primary driver of this decision. According to Hansabuss Chairman Indrek Halliste, the lines operate with limited capacity.

“The line’s capacity is modest. We have seen that it has been in a slight decline for some time,” Halliste stated. The company has been unable to secure approval from the Ministry of Transport to raise ticket prices, a potential solution to address the financial challenges.

Currently, the Ministry of Transport has not yet formally granted Hansabuss permission to discontinue the Viljandi routes. However, the company has proactively outlined its planned actions, reflecting a significant operational adjustment. Hansabuss is a key provider of public transportation within the region, and this announcement raises concerns about potential transportation gaps for residents of Viljandi.

The company’s future plans for these lines remain subject to further discussion with the Ministry. —
