Scientists commemorated World Meteorological Day on March 23, 2023, marking 150 years of the world meteorological community’s work. The annual observance recognizes the interconnectedness of weather, climate, and water circulation across national boundaries, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in these fields. “Technological advancements have significantly enhanced our ability to understand and predict weather and climate patterns,” stated Taimar Ala, Director of the Environmental Agency. “We continually collect data from land, sea, and space, responding to growing user demand for information and safety services.” As climate change becomes increasingly apparent, the need for robust weather and observation data has intensified. The Environmental Agency published its 13th edition of the Meteorological Yearbook on Meteorological Day, providing an overview of the agency’s meteorological observation network and measurement results for 2022. The year 2022 was characterized by warmer, drier, and sunnier conditions in Estonia. The average annual rainfall was 531 mm, and the average air temperature was 7.1 degrees Celsius. Estonia recorded 2,066.1 sunny hours. Notably, March 2022 was exceptionally dry, ranking as the second driest on record. Summer heat waves occurred, alongside a thunderstorm in Kambja that caused localized damage. Heavy snowfall over Western Estonian islands in autumn resulted in tree damage and power outages. Extensive rainfall on the same islands in December also led to tree damage and widespread power disruptions. The findings are detailed within the Meteorological Yearbook. A conference, titled “The Future of Weather, Climate and Water for Generations,” is scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. The event will focus on adaptation strategies in response to changing conditions, incorporating the latest findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. Experts and researchers from the agricultural and forestry sectors, alongside representatives from the Fridays for Future Estonia association, will participate in the discussion.
