A long-nosed species, the small koovitaja, has been found in the Gambia mangrove forest. One distinguishing characteristic of the small koovitaja from the large koovitaja is a bright stripe along the dorsal fin. Photo: Rein Kuresoo.

The large koovitaja was once a common breeder on Estonian fields and meadows, and is now rarely seen on large, modern agricultural fields.

  1. It’s fascinating to see these cormorants embarking on their migration after the full moon – a beautiful natural event.
