Tallinn Launches New ‘Smart Mini Libraries’

Tallinn’s public libraries are introducing a new initiative designed to enhance access to reading materials for residents. Starting April 1st, three strategically located mini libraries will open their doors, offering a more accessible borrowing experience. This marks the first implementation of this concept within Estonia.

The Tallinn libraries have established these smaller, self-service stations in high-traffic areas to provide immediate access to a selection of books. Residents can quickly borrow and return titles without visiting a traditional library branch. These “smart mini libraries” utilize a contactless borrowing system, streamlining the process for users.

The locations chosen for the initial launch were selected based on community demand and foot traffic data. Library officials stated that the project aims to promote literacy and encourage reading among residents of all ages. The introduction of mini libraries represents a modern approach to library services, reflecting the evolving needs of the community.

Further expansion of the mini library network is planned following an initial evaluation of the program’s success. The libraries will continue to offer their full range of services alongside this new initiative.
