Study Highlights Rising Risk of Tick-Borne Diseases in Estonia

A recent study conducted by the Estonian Health Board has revealed a concerning increase in the prevalence of tick-borne diseases across Estonia. The research focuses on identifying areas of highest risk, providing crucial data for public health officials. The study specifically examined ticks collected from health trails in five counties, revealing that borreliosis, or Lyme disease, is the most common tick-borne illness identified within the Lääne-Virumaa region.

This area represents a significant concern for the Estonian population. In contrast, the research found the tick-borne encephalitis virus predominantly in Saaremaa. However, this virus was not detected in Lääne-Virumaa during the investigation.

Notably, the study confirmed a risk of tick-borne diseases extends beyond rural areas, with infected ticks also discovered in city parks. This underscores the need for vigilance in urban environments as well. The findings aim to provide a clearer understanding of geographic hotspots for tick exposure and the associated borne diseases, allowing for targeted preventative measures and informing public awareness campaigns within Estonia.
