A family from the occupied Luhansk region of Russia has secured a new life in Estonia following a deportation narrowly avoided through deception and fortunate circumstance. The family, who have resided in the Russian-occupied territory, were spared deportation thanks to fabricated claims and a chance encounter. Their 12-year-old son currently earns a living selling bread.

“We lived practically in a basement for a month, subsisting on water and bread,” stated Yulia, the family’s mother, to Elu24. “We are very grateful for the warm welcome here.” The family’s transition represents a significant change in their life over the past year.
