The Rõuge church in South Estonia will have a new torch installed atop its tower tomorrow, concluding a year-long restoration project. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. with a divine service, followed by the installation of the torch and cone.

Previously, a cracked cross had been removed from the tower’s summit due to damage sustained during the restoration of the torchwork. The congregation intends to replace the cross with a rooster, a historically customary feature for churches in Livonia. The existing torch cone, in place since 1915, was damaged by a fire and subsequently replaced with the rooster.

The new torch cone will also incorporate a torch-shell designed as a time capsule, to be opened by future generations. The shell will include the current issue of the South Estonia Postimees. The project focuses on the refurbishment of the church tower.
