Narva City Mayor Katri Raik expressed satisfaction with the City Council’s decision to drop a court case concerning the tank monument. Raik, who was unable to attend the City Council meeting due to illness, stated to Postimees that the decision prevented a potential conflict between Narva and the rest of Estonia. She emphasized that a court battle would have represented a “clear confrontation” between Narva and the nation.

Raik voiced hope that the tank could be viewed as a relic of the past and that attention could shift to addressing pertinent local issues. She acknowledged the significant emotional response among Narva residents and the need for clarification and information. Raik previously stated that she would have resigned if the City Council had tasked the City Administration with the matter.

“This case would have been deeply pointless in terms of the future of Narva,” Raik asserted. She noted that while she, like many residents, has a stake in the issue, the focus must now move forward. Raik clarified that legal recourse regarding city assets is limited to the City Council or City Administration, not individual residents.

The core of the dispute centered on whether the state’s temporary storage of the tank, valued at under 500 euros, constituted an appropriate action. Raik admitted that tensions within Narva have lessened, and interactions with residents have become easier. She referenced a previous situation where she was the only smiling individual in the city.

Despite the absence of a formal opinion poll, the city may commission one in the near future to gauge public sentiment, referencing concerns expressed by Deputy Stalnuhhin. The mayor reiterated her commitment to both Estonia and Narva, emphasizing the need for progress despite disagreements.
