“Letters,” a collection of correspondence between Tõnu Õnnepalu and Jaan Kaplinski, has been published. The exchange began with the preface to the book “The Mind’s Place,” and continued through letters exchanged between 2020 and 2021. Õnnepalu explains that Kaplinski initially suggested expanding the material into a separate book.

Kaplinski, in one of the letters, expressed his appreciation for “intelligent chatter” in literature, describing it as a means of navigating life’s challenges. The correspondence features a significant level of intellectual exchange and open discussion on topics including death, life, religion, literature, language, and history. Õnnepalu and Kaplinski’s relationship was described as a “very good spiritual partnership,” with both individuals serving as equal guides.

The book’s publisher, Jaan Tootsen, noted its “calm, contemplative character” offers “great joy and spiritual nourishment” in an increasingly restless world. The book was edited by Tõnis Tootsen, designed by Peeter Laurits, and published by Aadam and Sons. Jaan Kaplinski and Tõnu Õnnepalu are featured in the correspondence.
